Smyrna Police and Fire Youth Academy

The Smyrna Police and Fire Departments are proud to announce a joint effort for the children (ages 8-13) of the Town of Smyrna. On the dates of June 18th – 22nd, a Youth Academy will be held at the Smyrna Fire station #2 located on Fitzhugh Blvd. The sessions are from 9am to 3pm, Monday through Thursday and 8am to Noon on Friday. Graduation will be at 11am on Friday.
A fee of $30.00 is required and the participants will be provided with lunch Monday through Thursday. Checks can be made out to the Town of Smyrna.
The sessions will be in a summer camp type agenda mixing outside and inside activities. The purpose of the academy is to interact with the children in a positive way and to demonstrate to the children the activities that both departments use on a daily basis. The number one focus, however, is safety in the daily lives of these children in various situations involving both fire and police services. The academy will use the officers and division personnel to incorporate “hands on” of various skills that the participants will find both challenging and fun.

In every event, the child's safety is the number one concern. Experienced officers of both departments are instructing the classes. At no point will the children be using any tool or apparatus without adult supervision.
An application must be completed and submitted along with the class fee of $30.00. The fee is to supplement the cost of food and transportation. A liability release, allowing treatment of injuries and for transporting the students for facility tours, is also required
The academy is open to students who are currently between ages of 8 and 13. Priority will be given to Town of Smyrna residents and first time participants. The class is limited to 50 students.
The children are encouraged to dress comfortable. Shoes, shorts and T-shirts are recommended. There will be one day that the children will swim, and on that day will be required to wear a swimsuit, along with shoes that can get wet.
Lunch will be provided on Monday through Thursday. Drinks will be provided for lunch. During the activities, water will be furnished. Please allow your child to bring a reusable water bottle every day. Please write your child's name on their water bottle.
All applications are due by 10am on Monday, May 14, 2018. If we do reach maximum capacity before that date, we will not accept any more applications.

Subject and class description
The communications section will focus on the first line of involvement, police and fire dispatch. Smyrna Police Dispatch will present the sessions. Included in this session will be a tour of the 911 center and the Smyrna Police Department.
An overview of the dynamics of fire and the safety needed with its involvement, with an overview of personal safety and abduction avoidance, water safety and other ways to keep children safe.
Personal Protective Equipment / SCBA
This will be a hands-on section in which the student practices donning fire gear used by fire department personnel, along with an interesting breakdown of the components and materials. Also the use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), in the form of air packs. Students will get the opportunity to wear and use this equipment.
Police Patrol, Detectives, K-9 Officers, and Firefighter Demos
Officers from the Smyrna Police Department will demonstrate the various functions of their respective divisions. The officers will utilize volunteers for demonstration as well as hands on fingerprinting and a few “tricks of the trade”. The impressive display of the K-9 officers will demonstrate the training and time utilized for this division. Fire department personnel will demonstrate equipment.
An approved course in CPR will be presented to the students. Students will demonstrate CPR on mannequins.
A fun day for the students. The day begins with the display of the fire department equipment and vehicles. A series of skill events will test the students in a fun way on use of hoses used in fire fighting as well as some equipment. After-lunch events include transportation to the Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center for swimming and more fun! Permission forms must be signed and turned in before students are allowed to participate in Water Day. All children must be picked up at the Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center located at 100 Sam Ridley Parkway East!
This section is a show and tell type format where the students can interact with the various emergency service personnel and the equipment that they utilize.
SWAT Team (Drill Area)
This session will be an exciting display. Team members will demonstrate different techniques and equipment used in various dangerous situations.
Escape and Smoke drills
By utilizing a vacant location we will discuss the escape plans needed in homes for fire safety. Students will plan and develop plans for their own homes in the event of a fire. By utilizing a non-toxic and environmentally safe smoke machine, we will demonstrate the conditions in a home that are present during a fire. The student will tour the location in a smoke situation and discover how much visibility is available!
Smyrna Court - Mock Trial
The students will be transported to the Smyrna Justice Center for a Mock Trial with Judge Lynn Alexander. Permission forms must be signed and turned in before students are allowed to participate in the mock trial.
Students will be presented with certificates of completion. A slideshow of pictures taken during the camp will be shown before the presentation of certificates. All parents are invited to attend the slideshow presentation and Graduation.
